How to Prepare for a Spray Tan

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

We believe that every spray tanning experience should be a pleasant one! But did you know that half of your results rely on how you prepare? If you want to achieve optimum results, here is how to prepare for a spray tan.

Planning ahead of time is essential. You need to decide beforehand what day you would like to have your tan ready for and book to have your spray tan done a day or two before this. Remember that a spray tan generally looks best after it has had a day or two to settle.

To avoid skin irritation, remember to wax or shave a day before you have a spray tan. This is specifically important for waxing because your pores remain open for hours when you wax, and spray tanning over open pores can generally encourage blocked pores as well as bacteria. Also, if you spray tan too soon after waxing, you may end up with remnants of wax on your skin and this could in turn strip off parts of your tan.

Shower and exfoliate your whole body while concentrating on the driest areas of your skin such as knees, elbows, feet and ankles. One of the most essential steps in how to prepare for a spray tan is that you exfoliate your skin on the morning of your spray tan or at least a day before you are due for spray tanning. Take a shower shortly before you go for your tanning appointment to ensure that you are as clean and as fresh as you can be.

After showering, do not apply moisturizer to your face or body, as this is likely to create a barrier against the tanning solution and prevent it from absorbing and tanning the skin. Also, avoid perfume, deodorants, body spray or indeed any other beauty products that are likely to have the same reaction with your spray tanning solution.

Wear dark loose fitting clothes to your appointment. After tanning your skin will most likely be marked by the tanning solution. As such, you should avoid wearing anything that you wouldn’t like to be stained. Note that loose fitting clothes also prevent your tan from being rubbed off.

If you follow these tips on how to prepare for a spray tan, you should be able to achieve a spray tan that is natural looking and which may last for 8 to 10 days.

How to Get Beach Hair Without Going to the Beach

There’s so many things we love about the summer season, styling our hair with heated hair supplies is definitely not one of them! Luckily With tousled and messy beach hair is the hottest trend this season. So flaunt those wavy tresses and turn into a carefree-Californian girl. You don’t have to sit on the beach or ride the waves to look like a beach babe. We’ve put together a few simple tips on how to get beach hair this summer:

– Wash your hair before going to bed and sleep on damp hair.

– Apply a lightweight mousse if you have thick hair whilst damp hair and scrunch. If you have thin hair, apply a molding mud so that your hair has some weight added to it.

– Make a braid after you have showered. Keep the braids for a day and take them out the next morning. The bigger the braids, the softer the curls. Smaller braids will give tighter and kinkier curls.

– Another great tip on how to get beach hair is to use a good salt spray to bring out your natural waves to create beach hair effect. Salt sprays work well on all hair types – from thin to straight hair. In addition, it adds volume to the hair and reduces frizz. Using salt spray for beach hair is quite simple: spray a little over wet or damp hair. Scrunch bunches of hair all the way up to the roots and let your hair air dry or lightly blow dry it.

– Beach hair can be created with the help of a 3-barrel curling iron. The larger the barrels, the looser the waves. Tighter waves are made with small barrels. Simply separate dry hair in sections and spray heat protectant over it. By starting closer to the roots, clamp the iron down for a few seconds and move down this section of hair. Repeat on each section.

– If you don’t want to apply any product to your hair but you’re still wondering how to get beach hair, you can try putting your hair into a bun. Make equal sections in your damp hair and twist each of them into 2-4 low buns. Smaller sections will give you smaller waves, while larger sections give large waves. Try this tip at night after showering. Undo the buns in the morning and brush through your beach hair with the help of your fingers. For touch-ups spritz some salt spray over these waves and scrunch.

– If you have short hair, spray salt spray over the hair. Do not comb the hair but just tousle the hair with your hands and fingers and mess it up.

– You can also create your beach hair by using a hair dryer. Take a hot shower and wash hair with a deep conditioner. Blow dry hair by putting your head down and lift your hair until your hair is slightly dry.

Common Spray Tan Problems & Solutions

The number of people opting for artificial tans is fast growing with many wanting to avoid the dangers of the sun’s harmful UV rays exposure. However, artificial tans do have their own risks so if you happen to get results you aren’t happy with you need to know how to remove spray tan. Here are some of the common spray tan problems and how they can be solved:

Orange or Off-Colour Effect

Any solution is capable of producing an orange bad fake tan on the skin as a result of over-application. Many people find it difficult to stick to the recommended amount of solution per session. Therefore, the more disciplined you are with the amount of solution that you use, the better. It can also be as a result of over spraying an area of the body that easily absorbs the solution. To overcome this problem, a towel can be used to wipe off the excess solution. However:

– An orange colour may be a result of using a solution with the wrong DHA for your given skin type. To prevent this bad fake tan, ensure that you use a solution with the right DHA for the skin type that you are dealing with.

– Before considering how to remove spray tan you should also remember that an unwanted orange colour could also be due to improper exfoliation by the client. To prevent this, a sunless exfoliating product may be helpful.

Sunless Tan Spots /Stains on the Skin

These types of stains that create a bad fake tan come from the immediate bronzer, which is a dye and the DHA ingredient. To prevent this, there are products which are available that can help deter and counteract the reaction of DHA. However, for an already developed DHA stain or skin, nothing is particularly effective. But here are some helpful remedies if you want to remove unsightly discolouration:

– Soak either in warm water or warm water mixed with baby oil for about 20 minutes and go on to scrub with some exfoliation.

– Rub on some hydrogen peroxide using a cloth or sponge followed by a quick shower.

– Rub on some lemon juice and follow this up with a shower.

– Use some body hair remover or body hair bleach as instructed on the product. Do not try to use regular bleach, as it can be very damaging to the skin.

Uneven Fading and ‘Lizard Skin’

With this bad fake tan, the colour will often begin to fade several days after the tanning session, thus creating a blotchy or scaly ‘lizard skin’ appearance. You can prevent this through daily rehydration using a tan extender or a moisturizer starting the day after your session. As well as avoiding a tanning solution with a DHA percentage that is higher than what is required for a fair-skinned client. If the results don’t come out quite looking right simply follow our tips on how to remove spray tan and try again!
