There’s no denying that spray tans give a gorgeous golden glow, but you still need to remove your tan at the end of its life. Spray tans generally last for anywhere between 7 and 10 days, so before applying the next tan, it’s best to get your skin ready by removing the old tan.  Unfortunately there are also the times when you accidently apply excess tan to a certain area.  Whether you’re removing the last of your fake tan or fixing a spray tan error, here are some fake tan removal tips to help you out!

Removing the last of your tan

1. Exfoliate

The exfoliating glove is the most commonly used fake tan remover, helping to remove the last of your tan and prepare your skin for your next spray.  Do not be tempted to scrub away at your skin harshly, but instead use large gentle circular motions.  This may take longer however will save your skin from being left red raw.  When exfoliating it is always best to choose a natural soap as the perfumes and chemicals in other soap products can dry out your skin, which is the last thing you want when you are preparing for your next spray tan.

2. Bath

If exfoliating hasn’t removed all your tan, you can try soaking in a warm bath.  The warm water will open your skin pores and encourage fake tan removal.  In order to avoid drying out your skin you can add a few drops of moisturising body wash to the water, which should help keep your skin soft and supple.  This has got to be the most relaxing of all fake tan removal processes!

3. Milk

It sounds strange, but milk is a fantastic fake tan remover! Not only does the lactic acid in Milk help break down fake tan chemicals, but it’s also a natural skin exfoliant.  This is a fantastic method of fake tan removal, being both natural and gentle. Using a clean face towel, dip it in milk and gently exfoliate the skin in large circular motions.

Removing excess spray tan from small areas

1.  Lemon Juice

The citric acid in lemon works as a bleaching agent, making it a great fake tan remover!  It’s perfect for removing tan from small areas such as your hands or feet when they receive a bit too much tan.  You can rub the lemon directly against your skin or use cotton wool buds to apply the juice.

2.  Hydrogen Peroxide

This fake tan remover should only be used to fix very small patches of skin.  While Hydrogen Peroxide is regularly used to disinfect cuts, excess amounts can result in irritations or even burns.  It’s best to purchase this product from pharmacists and ask for guidance on how much to use.  Apply the hydrogen peroxide to your skin with a cloth and leave it for about one minute before washing it off. You can repeat this a few times until your fake tan has faded.

3.  Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel can be purchased from all pharmacists and is used medicinally to treat numerous skin conditions.  This natural ingredient is sourced from a North African shrub and has the ability to lighten your skin pigment and rejuvenate the skin cells.  Witch Hazel is an extremely effective fake tan remover best suited to evening out blotchy areas.  Apply it to your skin with a cloth and leave it for a few minutes before washing off.
